The constant de-realizing process to which capitalism subjects material reality is not merely a side-effect of its restless renovations. It is the constitutive topography by which capitalism works. For capitalism, any place must be converted into an elsewhere of desire for it to be recuperable within the economics of absentee profit. Capitalism is a spatial economy.
