Shyamal Dutta Ray

Writing is what fills the void of God’s absence -Jacques Derrida

—Shyamal Dutta Ray was one of the rare Indian contemporary artist of west Bengal. An accomplished draftsman and painter Shyamal Datta Ray painted day to day life of the people. In water colors and oils he was one of the best. Shantiniketan Artists were always good in draftsmanship, they were never in hurry. Roy’s subtlety of lines are almost lyrical, verve of life is suggested by fluid lines, in semi abstract canvases an another kind of realism we find in him. He was compassionate towards suffering people and painted from it. I found this work interesting in today’s context. Currently INDIA looks like Shyama Dutta Roy’s India.
