anokha ladla -Ustad Bada Ghulam Ali khan

Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was born in the year 1902 in the great musical lineage from Kasur, located in Western Punjab. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khansaheb inherited the musical parampara (tradition) of Punjab that encompassed the Hindu, Muslim and Sikh religions.Saint Hazrat Bulleh Shah, whose Sufiana Kalam (Sufi song) is sung even today, was buried in Kasur, Ghulam Ali’s birth place. The shepherds, wandering in the hills, sang in praise of Hazrath Ali andHussain — grandsons of Prophet Muhammad — in melodies akin to classical Indian ragas. The shabads and qawwalis of the Sikhs were often based on ancient Dhrupads and Khayals, again Indian classical ragas. Though he was born in today’s Pakistan but he was spiritually rooted in Hindustani music. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali truly epitomizes the 20th century Hindustani classical music tradition . Often touted as the Tansen of 20th Century, this music maestro has blended the best of classical music and created a unique style of his own. He is one of the foremost Khayalist, his melodic voice, his emotional rendering is unique. In thumri singing he was undoubtedly a greatest singer. He blended the best of the four traditions of music: Patiala that was own, the elements of Dhrupad, the delicacy of Jaipur and the embellishments of Gwalior. Ustad Bade Ghulam sahab was very subtle in his tone and improvisation.

Here are two of his classic songs …

This is Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s Raagdarbari in his own style though its darbari kanada yet its unique in its embellishment. Its a RAM Bhajan but listen the way he sings it. Its classical in its best. The song was immortalized when Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan presented it in his own inimitable style.
‘anokha ladla…’

Another Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan’s unique Raagdarbari. Song is- ” Re tuna ke sajnawa humare tumare balema re!!!”

This is one of the great raaga of Jaunpuri gharana. Raga Darbari is derived from Thaat Asavari so its naturally melodious.. This is known as tarana, its raftar is unique and when Uastad sings it, it becomes a great classic !
